Fishing for catfish? Maybe you need some help, and Wade Bourne of MyOutdoorTV has just the tip. In this video, he shows you how to use dip bait to improve your catfish catches on the waters. It may smell disgusting, but it's well worth trying out.
Dip bait is commercial catfish bait that comes in paste form in a plastic tub container. Dip bait is very pungent-smelling and is manufactured in a variety of flavors: shad, cheese, blood, etc.
It is called dip bait because of how it is used. A special dip bait worm is the basis of this rig. The 1 ½-inch plastic worm has molded rings around its sides. It is rigged with a treble hook and stout line that is threaded through the worm for easy attachment to the main line. This worm is rigged as a simple float rig.
Here are tips for fishing a dip bait rig.
- Before casting, dredge the worm through the dip bait so it collects a good coating of the bait..
- Cast this rig out and wait for the dip bait to leach into the water. This attracts catfish through their ultra-sensitive sense of smell.
- Allow the worm and dip bait to float for extended periods of time over deep holes, next to rocks and root wads, along undercut banks and in other places where catfish might be lurking.
- Check the dip bait every few minutes and recoat the worm whenever the worm starts showing through the dip bait.
- When a catfish chomps down on the worm, wait for the float to go down and the line to start moving off before setting the hook.
